REO Speedwagon is coming to Waldorf!

Reo     It's hard to NOT be aware of REO Speedwagon's upcoming show at the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD.  They've got signs up for it all over the place, if it was legal they'd probably tattoo the foreheads of the Blue Crab's Baseball Team!

If you haven't gotten your tickets already, Hurry up!  I've got mine ordered, and I didn't think about it until today, but the concert is only 5 days away (August 11th!).  Thank god for the fact that I write all of my appointments down!

Here's the link to the website to buy tickets:

Southern Maryland Baseball Has Finally Arrived!!!

55_update_2     Charles County welcomed the new Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to the area on Friday, and local residents can now officially enjoy the national past-time right here in Waldorf!

The Regency Furniture Stadium itself is gorgeous, and really captures the essence and flavor of the region perfectly!  I was on the fence about participating personally, but I have to say that I love how the new ball park looks and feels!  This is an excellent recreational destination, and team owner Brooks Robinson has already announced that REO Speedwagon will be playing a concert there this summer on August 11th!

It sounds like I'm going to be heading to the stadium quite a bit this summer......

Work, and Reward

I admit, I'm not a big fan of the cold weather (why I ever lived further north is beyond me!).  I like summer, I like warm sunny weather, and I'm ready to enjoy said climate again.  I realized this morning that we are already in the middle of March!  Now, you would think this would be obvious, but not to me.  The days all run together when you don't take time off, and I've been neglecting to give myself any personal time.

J1024x68224920      With as many hours as I work each day, it's made me think about WHY I insist on working such long hours.  I think it has a lot to do with upbringing.  My brother and I both grew up on the water, and it was the greatest experience I could have ever asked for as a child.  We went crabbing daily, fishing just as often, and we typically ate whatever we caught that day when dinnertime came.

(For those of you In Southern Maryland or coming to the area, head to Captain Billy's for dinner, and order the crabs.  You'll thank me later.  Unless you're allergic to shellfish, in which case you should probably ignore me)

You've Got To WORK For The Reward

My parents were by no means wealthy, but they worked very hard for what they have, and among a list of things too long to mention, they taught us how to:

1)  Enjoy the basics.
2) Understand that if you enjoy your work, the long hours you put in are easy.

Fishing for dinner?  We've done it.  We didn't get the fancy Jet Ski's or power boats our friends got as kids.  We got a sailboat instead, the kind that fits one, possibly 2 if someone hangs off the side of the boat.

Jib Jabbering

J640x48024904_2       Sailing that boat was work, bar none!  It taught us some very important life lessons, though, and to this day, we still have that old boat, and I have zero interest in powerboats.  I remember being disappointed that I didn't have the latest and greatest toys as a child, and I didn't fully understand what my parents were doing, but there's no way I could thank them enough today.

Whenever I wanted to go sailing, it took an hour just to prepare the boat, and another 30 minutes to take the gear down afterwards.  I saw the link directly:  A little work, and a little reward.  I learned to enjoy working, and was glad to do so.  It's carried over into my adult life.  I enjoy my work immensely, and so I don't feel a need or desire to take time off often.

At any rate, because it's now mid-March, I need to take a day off, and go to Annapolis.  I need new sheets for my little boat, and I'm running out of time if I want to have it in the water by May first!  I wonder, will that qualify as time off to relax, or do Thomas and I need to find a new way to unwind?

(In case anyone was wondering, Thomas was the one sailing in the previous picture.  He's on the left, on the right in the fashionable orange jacket is a dog.)

Baseball Swings into Waldorf, MD

Smbaseball     Further proof that Waldorf is not as remote as some people seem to think it is:  We're getting our own Atlantic League Baseball Team (*insert cheering here*)!

I know, it's not THAT exciting, but I am pretty happy that it's happening, nonetheless.  I've known it was in the works for years, but I refused to believe it until it actually happened.  They've yet to sign any players, but the stadium is built (I've seen it with my own eyes!), and they signed the manager, Butch Hobson (Butch Who???).

Hobson     Apparently he managed the Boston Red Sox at some point, but I don't remember when.  Rumor has it that they passed on the likes of Cecil Fielder and Hall of Famer Gary Carter.  I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and claiming that it has to be because of Hobson's former pro managerial experience.

The team is called the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, and they are going to be part of the Atlantic League, which apparently is not associated with Major League Baseball, but they claim they have strong ties with MLB (think of it as not quite being famous, but they're all hoping to be, and would still make me look like a slob on the field, lol
).

Seriously though, this is a great moment for Charles County and Southern Maryland.  They're establishing professional sports locally, and both the owner Brooks Robinson (a personal favorite of mine!) and Hobson have pledged to be active in both Southern Maryland life and youth groups in particular.  I love it when I hear that influential people want to reach out to the community like that!

Opening day is May 2nd.  I plan to be there and I hope you do too!
